<p>Ha preso ufficialmente il via a Genova l’operatività di Green Pearl, la nuova nave dedicata al trasporto e al rifornimento di GNL e Bio-GNL noleggiata da Axpo per il Mediterraneo. L’unità rappresenta un’eccellenza tecnologica nel panorama europeo, grazie alla capacità di combinare operazioni di bunkeraggio nave-nave con il rifornimento diretto di autocisterne, semplificando la logistica small scale e rendendola più efficiente. Green Pearl è la prima e nuova bettolina per il bunkeraggio di GNL che rifornisce sia navi che camion.</p>



<p>Costruita dal cantiere San Giorgio del Porto per la società armatoriale G&amp;H Shipping, con la partecipazione di Sofipa, Green Pearl è una nave dual fuel a propulsione elettrica da 7.500 metri cubi di capacità. Progettata per ridurre l’impatto ambientale delle attività di trasporto e distribuzione energetica, l’unità si inserisce nel percorso di decarbonizzazione dei settori marittimo e del trasporto su gomma.</p>



<p>Con un’area operativa concentrata prevalentemente nel Mediterraneo occidentale e lungo le coste italiane, la nave rafforza il ruolo dell’Italia come snodo strategico per il GNL e il Bio-GNL. L’avvio della piena operatività di Green Pearl segna così un passo concreto verso una logistica energetica più flessibile, sicura e orientata alla transizione sostenibile. Grazie alla doppia tecnologia ship-to-ship e ship-to-truck, la nave potenzia la sicurezza energetica e accelera la decarbonizzazione nel Mediterraneo.</p>

<p><em>Axpo’s Green Pearl is now operational, expanding the company’s small-scale LNG bunkering capacity in the Mediterranean. The vessel supports both ship-to-ship and ship-to-truck operations, enhancing speed, flexibility, and reach across regional markets.</em></p>



<p><strong>Genoa, Italy | January 29, 2026 – The Mediterranean’s small-scale LNG landscape has undergone a decisive transformation with the official entry into service of the&nbsp;<a href="https://bunkermarket.com/axpo-commissions-small-scale-lng-bunkering-vessel/">LNG bunkering vessel</a>&nbsp;<em>Green Pearl</em>&nbsp;at the&nbsp;<a href="https://bunkermarket.com/axpo-and-gnv-completes-historic-sts-bio-lng-bunkering-in-genoa-port-italy/">Port of Genoa</a>. Chartered by energy major Axpo under a landmark ten-year agreement, the vessel marks a sophisticated leap in maritime energy logistics, seamlessly combining ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering with a pioneering ship-to-truck distribution model.</strong></p>



<p>Commissioned by <em>G&amp;H Shipping Srl</em>, a high-profile joint venture between <em>Gas and Heat S.p.A., San Giorgio del Porto Spa, and Sofipa Spa</em>, <em>Green Pearl</em> has been conceived as a mobile energy hub. With a cargo capacity of <em>7,500 cubic metres</em>, the vessel is strategically positioned to accelerate the uptake of both conventional LNG and carbon-neutral <em>Bio-LNG</em> across the Western Mediterranean.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Engineering a First-in-Europe Multi-Modal LNG Platform</strong></h5>



<p>While most LNG bunkering vessels remain limited to STS operations,&nbsp;<em>Green Pearl</em>&nbsp;introduces a breakthrough capability to the European market.</p>



<p>Built by an Italian industrial consortium led by&nbsp;<strong>Gas and Heat S.p.A.</strong>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<strong>San Giorgio del Porto shipyard</strong>, the vessel is equipped with the patented&nbsp;<strong>LNG4Speed®</strong>&nbsp;technology. This system enables&nbsp;<em>continuous ship-to-truck LNG transfers</em>, allowing&nbsp;<em>Green Pearl</em>&nbsp;to operate as a floating terminal directly connected to road tanker logistics.</p>



<p>The design of the <em>Green Pearl</em> LNG bunkering vessel was developed by Marine Engineering Services S.r.l. (MES), which also provided continuous technical support to the shipyard throughout all phases of construction. MES’s engineering expertise played a key role in achieving the vessel’s high performance standards and operational reliability.</p>



<p>The innovation effectively decentralizes LNG distribution. By bypassing the need for capital-intensive onshore terminals, Axpo can now supply inland industrial consumers and smaller regional ports, dramatically expanding the reach of small-scale LNG without multi-million-euro infrastructure investments.</p>

<p>Operating primarily along the Italian coastline and throughout the Western Mediterranean,&nbsp;<em>Green Pearl</em>&nbsp;strengthens Italy’s ambition to establish itself as the Mediterranean’s primary&nbsp;<strong>“gas hub.”</strong>&nbsp;Its deployment comes at a critical moment, as&nbsp;<em>FuelEU Maritime regulations</em>, effective from 2025, mandate progressive reductions in greenhouse gas intensity for shipping.</p>

<p>Lo ha sottolineato il Presidente dell’Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mar Ligure Occidentale, Matteo Paroli, intervenendo questa mattina alla cerimonia istituzionale di presentazione dell’unità, ospitata al Waterfront di Genova.</p>



<p>“Oggi abbiamo la dimostrazione concreta che impegno, tecnologia e professionalità italiane riescono a realizzare ciò che per trent’anni non era stato possibile”, ha dichiarato Paroli. “La Green Pearl non è un’unità di piccolo cabotaggio, ma una vera e propria nave ammiraglia: una bettolina da 7.500 metri cubi di GNL, capace di operare senza limitazioni e di offrire al nostro sistema portuale nuove opportunità di sviluppo”. Progettata e costruita interamente in Italia, grazie alla collaborazione tra Gas and Heat S.p.A. e il cantiere San Giorgio del Porto, e noleggiata dal Gruppo Axpo, la Green Pearl rappresenta una delle iniziative più avanzate a livello nazionale ed europeo nel campo del bunkeraggio LNG e bio-LNG, con modalità operative ship-to-ship e ship-to-truck. L’unità è destinata a operare nei porti del Tirreno, rafforzando il ruolo di Genova, Savona e Vado Ligure come hub energetici e logistici per i carburanti a basso impatto ambientale.</p>



<p>Nel suo intervento, il Presidente Paroli ha posto l’accento sul valore sistemico del progetto: “Con l’entrata in servizio della Green Pearl diventa più semplice e concreta l’interazione virtuosa tra porto, città e territorio. Un’interazione che genera valore aggiunto, ritorni economici e benefici ambientali immediati per chi lavora e vive intorno ai nostri porti”.<br>Il GNL consente infatti una riduzione significativa delle emissioni rispetto ai carburanti tradizionali, abbattendo ossidi di zolfo, particolato e riducendo sensibilmente la CO₂. “Parliamo di benefici ambientali immediati” &#8211; ha sottolineato Paroli &#8211; “che migliorano la qualità dell’aria e permettono di estendere il valore della marittimità di Genova anche ai quartieri della città”. A regime, sono previsti fino a 56 rifornimenti settimanali di traghetti alimentati a GNL nel porto di Genova, con vantaggi diretti per armatori, operatori e cittadini.</p>



<p>Un risultato reso possibile da una forte collaborazione istituzionale. “Il coordinamento dell’Autorità di Sistema Portuale non sarebbe bastato senza il lavoro della Capitaneria di Porto”, ha evidenziato il Presidente, ringraziando l’Ammiraglio Ranieri e le strutture dell’Autorità Marittima per aver garantito procedure snelle, sicure e certe nei tempi, fondamentali per il passaggio dalla sperimentazione all’operatività industriale.<br>L’entrata in esercizio della Green Pearl si inserisce in una strategia più ampia dell’AdSP per la transizione energetica e la competitività sostenibile dei porti del sistema. Tra gli interventi in corso: l’elettrificazione delle banchine (cold ironing), operativa a partire da giugno; i sistemi intelligenti di distribuzione e accumulo dell’energia; lo sviluppo del fotovoltaico nelle aree portuali e l’autorizzazione al deposito costiero di GNL a Vado Ligure, infrastruttura chiave per rafforzare la filiera del bunkeraggio nel Nord Tirreno.<br>“La sfida della costruzione tecnica è vinta. Ora ne inizia un’altra, altrettanto importante: saper comunicare alla città il valore di questi investimenti”, ha concluso Paroli. “Dobbiamo far comprendere che il porto non è un problema, ma una parte della soluzione: un motore di sviluppo che può crescere riducendo il proprio impatto ambientale e migliorando la qualità della vita. È una sfida di coesione con il territorio che vogliamo vincere insieme a tutte le istituzioni del territorio, penso alla Regione, ai Comuni e alle Capitanerie in primis, e alle imprese”.</p>



<p>Con la Green Pearl, il Sistema Portuale del Mar Ligure Occidentale conferma così il proprio ruolo di laboratorio avanzato della transizione energetica, capace di coniugare innovazione, sostenibilità ambientale e competitività economica.</p>

<p>È mancato ‘in persona’ – lo si è visto solo in video collegamento remoto &#8211; il festeggiato principale della giornata, ovvero la nuova nave, legittimamente tenuta ancora ormeggiata presso il cantiere di costruzione per questioni di sicurezza e legalità.</p>

<p>Quello che invece non è certamente mancato è – come direbbero i cronisti degli avvenimenti sportivi – il pubblico delle grandi occasioni; perché la cerimonia ‘virtuale’, svoltasi in un locale nei fondi del nuovo complesso residenziale del Waterfront di Levante disegnato da Renzo Piano, di inizio di operatività della Green Pearl è stata un vero successo di partecipazione, con un paio di centinaia di selezionati ospiti intervenuti tra addetti ai lavori e istituzioni territoriali e settoriali.</p>

<p>Quello che invece non è certamente mancato è – come direbbero i cronisti degli avvenimenti sportivi – il pubblico delle grandi occasioni; perché la cerimonia ‘virtuale’, svoltasi in un locale nei fondi del nuovo complesso residenziale del Waterfront di Levante disegnato da Renzo Piano, di inizio di operatività della Green Pearl è stata un vero successo di partecipazione, con un paio di centinaia di selezionati ospiti intervenuti tra addetti ai lavori e istituzioni territoriali e settoriali.</p>



<p>La breve ma allegra festa è avvenuta nella cornice di una bella giornata di sole – quasi a rappresentare un significato di protezione offertale anche dalle bizzose divinità meteorologiche – simbolicamente a interrompere un periodo di forti fenomeni pluviali su Genova e dintorni, alla faccia di chi crede nel detto ‘festa bagnata, festa fortunata’.</p>

<p>Protagonisti principali della giornata le società che ruotano attorno all’ambizioso progetto: il cantiere San Giorgio del Porto, che ha costruito la nave per conto dell’armatore G&amp;H Shipping – a sua volta una join venture tra Gas and Heat di Livorno dei fratelli Evangelisti, lo stesso San Giorgio del Porto della famiglia Garrè, e il socio aggregatosi per ultimo, ovvero la So.Fi.Pa., holding del gruppo Ottavio Novella degli armatori Marco, Valeria Novella e Luca Stegagnini – e soprattutto, anche in quanto padrone di casa di giornata, il noleggiatore della gasiera, la multinazionale elvetica Axpo Solutions AG che ha preso la Green Pearl in long time charter.</p>

<p>Per accuratezza di cronaca l’unità è stata realizzata dal costruttore genovese su design dello studio di ingegneria triestino MES della famiglia La Valle, mentre il full management spetta alla K-Ships di Francesco Russo, che ha seguito pure tutto il pre-delivery.</p>



<p>A stringersi attorno ai festeggiati c’erano le istituzioni territoriali, dal Governatore Regionale Marco Bucci alla Consigliera Comunale Serena Finocchio; e quelle settoriali, con l’Amm. Antonio Ranieri, Comandante del Porto di Genova e della Direzione Marittima della Liguria, e il binomio al vertice dell’Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mar Ligure Occidentale, il Presidente Matteo Paroli e il neo Segretario Generale Tito Vespasiani.</p>



<p>E quindi una bella rappresentanza dello shipping e del settore gasiero: Matteo Catani (GNV), Beniamino Maltese (Genova Trasporti Marittimi), Marco Bisagno e Marco Ghiglione (T.Mariotti), Marco Risso (Cambiaso Risso), Pietro Roth (Assarmatori), Dario Soria (Assocostieri), Marika Venturi (OLT Offshore LNG Toscana), Alessandro Manfredi (GNL Med).</p>

<p>L’unità, dual fuel e a propulsione elettrica, ha una capacità di 7.500 m³ di GNL ed è progettata per operare &#8211; prima in Europa &#8211; anche in modalità ship-to-ship (approvvigionamento alle navi) e ship-to-truck (rifornimento alle autocisterne gasiere), così da potere contribuire a migliorare efficienza e rapidità della logistica energetica small scale nel Mediterraneo.</p>

<p>L’innovativa gasiera per il trasporto small scale e per il rifornimento di GNL e Bio-GNL garantisce una notevole semplificazione delle operazioni di distribuzione small scale e genera ricadute positive in termini di sicurezza energetica e di supporto al tessuto economico nazionale.</p>



<p>Green Pearl rappresenta un modello avanzato di innovazione per la logistica energetica marittima e terrestre, a supporto dei processi di decarbonizzazione del settore marittimo e del trasporto su gomma, rafforzando il ruolo dell’Italia come hub strategico per la distribuzione del GNL nel Mediterraneo, contribuendo in modo concreto al rafforzamento della sicurezza energetica del Paese.</p>



<p>Commissionata nell’estate 2023 e noleggiata dal Gruppo Axpo per i prossimi 10 anni, Green Pearl è stata concepita ponendo al centro del progetto l’applicazione industriale di tecnologie e processi.</p>



<p>La nave, lunga 117 metri e larga 18 metri, ha una capacità di 7.500 metri cubi di GNL.</p>



<p>“G&amp;H Shipping consegna ufficialmente la nuova unità al prestigioso noleggiatore Axpo con grande orgoglio e senso di responsabilità” ha affermato Marco Novella, Presidente di G&amp;H Shipping. “Comincia oggi un percorso condiviso di lungo periodo, con un noleggio della durata iniziale di 10 anni, che auspichiamo possano raddoppiare nel tempo, durante i quali tutte le parti si impegneranno a collaborare per garantire il pieno successo di questo progetto innovativo, nato con il desiderio di contribuire concretamente alla transizione energetica; mettiamo a disposizione dei soggetti coinvolti il massimo impegno e la piena collaborazione, con l’obiettivo di crescere e migliorare insieme”.</p>

<p>La nave è stata noleggiata da Axpo nell’ottica di un progetto strategico di sviluppo del mercato small scale GLN e bio GLN marittimo, rafforzando la catena di approvvigionamento nei porti italiani e, potenzialmente, in altri scali mediterranei.</p>



<p>Il nome prescelto è il risultato di un’iniziativa interna al Gruppo Axpo che ha coinvolto tutta la popolazione aziendale in un contest che invitava i dipendenti a proporre un nome per la nuova imbarcazione. Tra le oltre 450 proposte pervenute, la scelta è ricaduta su quella di Peter Palinkas, della Divisione Nucleare di Beznau; ispirato dal suo amore per il mare, ha unito il concetto di Green come rappresentazione di un’energia più rispettosa dell’ambiente rispetto ai combustibili marittimi tradizionali a Pearl che evidenzia come l’imbarcazione rappresenti qualcosa di prezioso e unico, una vera gemma del Mediterraneo.</p>

<p>The Green Pearl, a ship for transporting and supplying with LNG (liquefied natural gas), was inaugurated in Genoa: it will be able to supply ferries and cruise ships also with bio-LNG. It was commissioned in summer 2023 to the Genoese shipyard San Giorgio del Porto, on behalf of G&amp;h shipping, a company between Gas and Heat (Evangelisti family) and San Giorgio itself, on the basis of a long charter contract (10 years) with Axpo Solutions. In recent months, Sofipa, the holding company of the Ottavio Novella shipping group, has also joined the company.</p>



<p>A dual fuel, electrically propelled unit, Green Pearl is 118 metres long and has a capacity of 7,500 cubic metres of LNG. It is designed to operate both <em>ship-to-ship</em> (supplying gas to ships) and <em>ship-to-truck</em> (supplying gas tankers ashore). Its area of operation will be the Mediterranean (mainly West Mediterrean and Italian coasts), while its deployment will be flexible, linked to contingent LNG and bio LNG refuelling needs at major ports. The vessel has been chartered by Axpo as part of a strategic project to develop the small-scale maritime LNG and bio LNG market, strengthening the supply chain in Italian ports and, potentially, in other Mediterranean ports.</p>



<p>&#8220;With Green Pearl,&#8221; says Simone Demarchi, Axpo Italy&#8217;s CEO, &#8220;we give concrete form to our vision: to accelerate the transition of maritime transport through safe, innovative and sustainability-oriented solutions. It is a project that strengthens Italy&#8217;s role in the Mediterranean, both as a distribution hub and as a platform capable of enabling new supply chains and making energy logistics more efficient, to the benefit of security of supply for the entire country.</p>



<p>According to Marco Novella, president of G&amp;h shipping, &#8220;a long-term shared path begins today, with an initial 10-year charter, which we hope can be doubled over time, during which all parties will be committed to cooperating to the best of their ability to ensure the full success of this innovative project, which was also born with the desire to contribute concretely to the energy transition. We are particularly proud that the unit is flying the Italian flag, despite the complexity and commitment required by the process&#8217;.</p>

<p><strong>Clients</strong><br>Marine Engineering Services (MES) is a naval engineering company specialized in the design of gas carriers, chemical tankers and gas-propelled vessels.<br>Founded in 1986 by engineer Giorgio La Valle, who had designed the first gas carrier in 1978, MES has gained extensive field experience with more than 100 vessels built from its own designs. Collaboration with leading Italian and international clients has enabled the team to develop highly specialized expertise and successfully face major challenges in an increasingly competitive and complex market, which has seen a significant shift toward the Far East.</p>



<p>ENGYS, founded in 2010 by a group of engineers specialized in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for industry, is a service company focused on consulting and developing open-source CFD software solutions used for engineering analysis, design, and optimization. Its team of engineers and IT specialists provides software development services and engineering consulting across numerous industrial sectors, including automotive, motorsport, naval, turbomachinery, aerospace, energy, and manufacturing processes. Today, the company operates worldwide through a network of distributors and resellers, with six offices on four continents and more than 200 clients.</p>



<p style="text-transform:none"><strong>Objective</strong><br>The objective of the Hi4TrAIning project is to facilitate and improve the effectiveness of onboard personnel training through immersive virtual reality, enhancing operators’ ability to act, react, and make decisions in critical contexts such as gas leaks, fires, or other hazards. Ultimately, the project aims to contribute to better emergency management on ships—particularly those powered by gas—and to ensure greater safety.</p>



<p><strong>Development</strong><br>To strengthen crew training, an immersive virtual reality software platform was developed, providing a fast and effective learning mode thanks to the use of 3D headsets and the reconstruction of realistic and interactive scenarios that simulate onboard emergency situations.<br>Over the course of several months, detailed 3D environments were created to accurately reproduce ship interiors and components. These models were integrated into an advanced virtual reality environment designed to offer the crew safe exposure to complex operational scenarios, reducing training time while increasing its effectiveness.<br>Data on the dispersion of hazardous gases for onboard personnel are based on artificial intelligence techniques and the processing of databases generated from high-fidelity CFD simulations carried out with open-source software. The platform has been designed to be modular and customizable, allowing the assessment of staff preparedness through dedicated KPIs. In the near future, it may also expand its applications beyond the maritime field to other sectors such as industrial plants and offshore platforms.<br>Hi4TrAIning was developed by the Trieste-based companies MES – Marine Engineering Services and ENGYS, in collaboration with two organizations from the SMACT ecosystem: HCI Lab – Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory of the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics at the University of Udine, which developed the training scenarios in virtual reality, and SISSA mathLab, a research unit of SISSA in Trieste, dedicated to reduced-order modeling and its industrial applications. The project also benefited from the collaboration of mareFVG, the maritime technology cluster of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, acting as coordinator of the activities.</p>



<p><strong>Granted Contribution</strong><br>The project was funded by SMACT through the IRISS Project Call (Innovation, Industrial Research, and Experimental Development) 2023, within the framework of PNRR – Next Gen. EU – M4C2I2.3, with a grant of €399,366.00.</p>

<p>Una piattaforma intelligente che, simulando situazioni emergenziali attraverso la realtà virtuale immersiva, addestra il personale a bordo nave: è l’idea alla base di <a href="https://mes.it/hi4training/">Hi4TrAIning</a>, un progetto di ricerca sperimentale da 669mila euro, cofinanziato per 400mila euro nell’ambito del bando Iriss promosso da Smact Competence center.</p>
