Definition of S-Curves

S-Curves are a project management tool used to track and visualize the cumulative progress of a project over time—often measuring cost, labor hours, or overall completion percentage. They derive their name from the characteristic “S” shape that emerges when project activity starts slowly, accelerates during the main execution phase, and then tapers off as the project nears completion. By comparing planned versus actual data, S-Curves help project managers identify schedule deviations early and implement corrective actions to keep the project on track.
