The vessel was designed by M.E.S. for Keppel Nantong Shipyard and Stolt Nielsen Owner.
The ship is intended for the small-scale LNG bunkering and gas supply, being carefully studied for ship to ship operations and for the ship to terminal operations as well. Indeed, the original purpose of the ship was to supply the new small scale LNG terminal in Oristano (Sardinia, Italy). Following her maiden voyage, Avenir Advantage will commence a three-year charter to Petronas LNG Sdn Bhd in Malaysia; becoming the first dedicated LBV in South East Asia. She will supply LNG to fuel ships operating in the region and deliver LNG directly to Petronas small-scale customers.
On 11st of April, Keppel Nantong Shipyard launched the second 7500 m3 LNG bunkering vessel. The series of ships, designed by our Company MES, is built for Avenir LNG Ltd (Norvegian Stolt-Nielsen is the largest shareholder of the Company). M.E.S., Marine Engineering Services S.r.l., is project leader of TUGA (Escort Tug Gas Propelled), a research and development project in the field of maritime technologies. The project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and in the framework of Regional Operational Program (2014-2020), Investments to support Growth and Employment Objective 2014-2020, Axis 1 – “Strengthening research, technological development and innovation”, Action 1.3 – “Support of collaborative R&D activities for the development of new sustainable technologies, products and services “.
The project TUGA is started on 1st October 2018 and it focuses on the study and design of a escort tug unit to support ship’s operations and improve navigation and maneuvering in restricted waters.
TUGA will plan a small-dimension unit integrated with a liquefied gas propulsion system designed to increase the competitiveness when compared to the traditional propulsion systems currently in use. Moreover, the research project will study the correct arrangement of the fuel containment system and optimizing the geometries while taking care of the safety requirements.
A calculation code for the determination of the dynamic equilibrium in stock operations will be developed together with software for the simulation of the rigid motion of tugs exposed to hydrodynamic resistance and propulsive forces. The results will be validated in a relevant environment with experimental tests in the ship model basin.
The ship designed by MES for Stolt Nielsen and built by Keppel Nantong Shipyard was launched during the night of the 20th of July, after the Launching Ceremony and at the presence of all the Stakeholders: Keppel Nantong Shipyard, Stolt Nielsen representative, DNV-GL, Gas&Heat and MES.

Pronte le cisterne per la gasiera di Stolt-Nielsen che opererà nel futuro terminal di Oristano. Nel frattempo la società ha ‘girato’ la sua partecipazione in Higas alla controllata Avenir LNG, in cui contestualmente sono entrate Golar LNG e Hoegh LNG Holding.
Come noto, i due serbatoi formeranno il sistema di contenimento della nave gasiera (con capacità di 7.500 metri cubi) che l’armatore Stolt-Nielsen Gas ha ordinato nel giugno 2017 a Keppel Shipyard (su progetto dell’italiana MES), con consegna fissata nel dicembre 2019, nave che verrà impiegata al servizio del deposito GNL Higas di Oristano, di cui peraltro Gas & Heat è tra gli azionisti (insieme a CPL Concordia e alla stessa Stolt-Nielsen Gas, quest’ultima con la quota di controllo del 66,25%).

C869 Escort Tug “Cap de Fer” designed by MES for Cantiere Navale Vittoria was delivered to Algerian Port Authority. This is the third tug designed by MES and he has a bollard pull of 47 tons, 26m length and 10m breadth. The service speed is 12.5 knots
