M.E.S. (Marine Engineering Services S.r.l) was established in 1986 by its chairman Mr Giorgio La Valle. Over the course of the years, M.E.S. has conquered the leadership in the ship design and marine consultancy, its Clients being important operators of the international shipping and shipbuilding industry.
At present time, there are almost a hundred of ships designed by our Company operating worldwide. Specialized in high-tech vessels, i.e. gas tankers, chemical tankers and bitumen carrier, the Company is experienced also in other branches of the Naval Architecture, having designed RO-RO vessels, tugs and barges, etc… and covering a wide range of marine services. Besides the basic design and the detailed engineering, it is indeed able to follow its Clients in the choice of the Shipyard in the pre-contractual phase, then in supervision during building, by means of a constant support from the head office as well as by a team of surveyors with recognized experience, from the steel cutting to the delivery and also during the operating life of the ship. The surveillance activity on-site is in fact essential to guarantee the high level of standard required by the Clients.
Our first aim is always the absolute satisfaction of our Clients, developing special designs perfectly shaped to meet any variety of particular requirements. Furthermore, the Company’s focus is the attention to the improvements of marine technology, the changes of the market and new requirements of the Clients/Majors. Through its participated partnership, supplying cargo plants and cargo tanks for liquefied gas, M.E.S. has under control every aspect of the production of the ship.
Anyway, we suppose the winning formula is that “the best design is always the next to come…”
MES Timeline
UNDER CONSTRUCTION
1986
MES is born
After gaining experience as a designer at Italcantieri (now Fincantieri) and as a gas tanker operator at Gasocean, and after co-founding LGE Italia—a company specialized in the production of gas systems for ships—Mr. Giorgio La Valle went on to found his own company, MES (Marine Engineering Services S.r.l.)
1992
First Chemical Tanker at KEPPEL Group
Singapore’s shipyards had never built these kind of vessels, they had never worked for the Europeans and they had always dealt only with refitting.
The Keppel group had political and governmental interests in entering the new buildings market through a venture with a leading European group. This enabled Mediterranea di Navigazione to have their projects and standards accepted by the Singapore shipyard at a very competitive price.
Cooperating with MES, the company managed to launch their ambitious project M/V LONGOBARDA.
1996
The Establishment of GAS & HEAT
GAS & HEAT was founded by Mr. Giorgio La Valle and the Evangelisti brothers. Benefiting from its accumulated expertise inherited from predecessors Officine San Marco and Deutsche Babcock, and strengthened by its partnership with MES, GAS & HEAT has established itself as the leader in Italy for the supply of cargo systems on gas carriers constructed to date.
2001
New Market Entry in Turkey
M/t Cosmo, 5.884 DWT / 6.539 DWT is the first IMO II chemical tanker built in Turkey with top European criteria (Green Star, IGS), for the Italian Shipowner Mediterranea di Navigazione.
2007
WINTERISATION CLASS
M/T Saracena, a 20,500 DWT chemical tanker (IMO II), proudly stands as the first Italian vessel to receive RINA’s prestigious Winterisation Notation. This state-of-the-art tanker boasts unparalleled reliability and safety with its fully redundant design, featuring twin engines, twin propellers, and twin rudders. Engineered for a 30-year service life, the vessel achieves exceptional performance through comprehensive hull form optimization conducted in collaboration with a Wien Model Basin. These innovations ensure efficiency, resilience, and operational excellence in even the most demanding conditions.
After several years of attempts, at the end of 2013, MES signed a design contract with the Chinese shipyard Ningbo Xingle for the construction of two chemical tankers with stainless steel cargo tanks, each with a deadweight of 19,800 DWT, for the shipowner De Poli Tankers, based in Holland.
The first ship was delivered in 2016, the second in 2017.
In parallel, another Chinese shipyard, Avic Dingheng, has commissioned MES a design for a series of 10 chemical tankers, each with a capacity of 25,000 DWT and classified as IMO 2, for an American shipowner, Chemical Transportation Group.
LNG Familiarization Course for Shipyards Personnel on Cruise Vessels
At the request of its Client, MES organized and conducted a series of specialized Training Courses aimed at equipping shipyard personnel with the expertise required to handle and manage LNG during various stages of ship construction at the yard. These courses emphasized best practices, safety protocols and operational efficiency to ensure safe and effective LNG management throughout the construction process.
